Create a survey in Hindi

Write your survey in English. People who are more at home in Hindi pick हिन्दी and answer every question in it, on any phone — no translator, no second copy of the survey.

The screen on the right uses SurveySetu's real Hindi interface text. The question is an example of the kind of translation respondents get; your own questions are machine-translated when someone picks Hindi.

How it works

Running a survey for Hindi speakers

  1. Build in English

Use the builder or a template. Short, plain sentences translate best.

  2. Offer Hindi

In the survey's language settings, offer Hindi — alone or with others — and star it as the default if most of your audience reads it.

  3. Respondents answer in Hindi

The survey opens with a language picker; respondents can switch language at the top of the screen at any time.

  4. Results in one place

Choice answers from every language add up in the same charts, with a breakdown by language. Typed answers arrive exactly as written.

Hindi on SurveySetu: the details

  • Hindi is written in the Devanagari script. SurveySetu shows it with the phone's built-in Hindi font, so respondents don't download anything extra.
  • Questions and answer options are machine-translated into Hindi, checked to really be in Devanagari script, and cached, so everyone answering in Hindi sees the same wording.
  • Place names in targeting and location questions are localised too, using their district and state as context.
  • Setu can read each question aloud on tap with the phone's own Hindi voice. If a phone has no Hindi voice installed, the text still shows; only the read-aloud is unavailable.
  • Hindi typed in English letters (for example “Aapki umar kya hai?”) is written in Devanagari for Hindi respondents.
Reaching Hindi speakers Hindi is widely spoken in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi and the other Hindi-speaking states. Combine Hindi as the default language with location targeting (state, district, block or gram panchayat) to reach the right people.

Questions about surveys in Hindi

Do I have to write my survey in Hindi?

No. You build the survey in English and SurveySetu translates it into Hindi automatically when a respondent picks Hindi. You don't need a translator or a second version of the survey.

Can respondents type their answers in Hindi?

Yes. Open-text answers come back exactly as the respondent typed them, in Hindi (हिन्दी) or any other language, and choice answers from every language are counted together in the same chart.

Can I make Hindi the default language?

Yes. In the survey's language settings, offer Hindi (with or without the others) and star it as the default, so the survey opens in Hindi for everyone. Respondents can still switch language at the top of the screen.

Is the machine translation always perfect?

No machine translation is. Keep questions short and plain, avoid idioms and abbreviations, and open your survey link in the language yourself (or ask a native speaker) before you share it widely. If a translation service is briefly unavailable, a line can show in English until it is translated.
